Stephen Markley is an American author known for his ambitious and socially conscious novels. His writing blends character-driven storytelling with larger societal themes such as economic decline, war, and the climate crisis.
His second novel, The Deluge, is a dystopian narrative focused on the far-reaching consequences of climate change spanning 2013 to the 20230s. The novel has received compelling feedback at addressing critical global issues while maintaining a deeply human focus, and was named as one of The New York Times Notable Books of 2023; the dystopia is realistic and nuanced, grim but playful, setting Markley’s book apart from the tsunami of recent climate-change literature.
Join Life Itself and the Climate Majority Project on Friday, September 20th, for an in-person deep dive into the key themes explored in The Deluge. We’ll question whether The New York Times’ description of the book as a dystopia is accurate and we’ll explore the alternative concept of "thrutopia." As defined by Rupert Read of the Climate Majority Project, thrutopia is about getting through what is coming responsibly, transformatively in the best way we can. This idea emphasizes not only the potential for societal collapse but also the hope for regeneration, focusing on how we can rebuild and renew in the face of the climate crisis.
“This book is, simply put, a modern classic. If you read it, you'll never forget it. Prophetic, terrifying, uplifting.” - Stephen King
