About the call
In this Community Research call Jonah Wilberg explores the idea of progress in cultural evolution, in relation to Thomas Kuhn’s notion of paradigm shifts in science.
Jonah considers whether Kuhn’s model of paradigm shifts can be applied more broadly to cultural paradigms, and how this connects to the ‘transcend and include’ model of progress within metamodernism. He suggests that metamodern approaches could apply insights from post-Kuhnian philosophy of science, such as the notion of structural realism.
The subsequent lively dialogue raises questions about the differences between scientific and cultural progress, the perspectival nature of knowledge, and the dynamics of cultural shifts.
